MinneLakes.org is a static website. There are no user accounts, no comment forms and no sign-up.
Information we do not collect
- Your location. The Near Me and tool pages ask your browser for your location only when you press the button. The coordinates are used in your browser to sort lakes by distance and are never sent to our servers.
- Search queries. Search runs in your browser against a downloaded index of lakes.
- Theme preference. Light or dark mode is saved in your browser's local storage.
Information that is collected
- Server logs. Our hosting provider records standard request data such as IP address, browser type and the page requested, for security and operations.
- Analytics. If analytics is enabled, it records aggregate page views using cookies or similar identifiers. You can block this with your browser settings or a content blocker without affecting the site.
Third-party services
Pages load map tiles from OpenStreetMap, fonts served with the site, and a weather forecast from the US National Weather Service. Those services receive your IP address and, for the forecast, the coordinates of the lake you are viewing. Links to other websites, including the Minnesota DNR and Google Maps, are governed by those sites' own policies.
Children
The site is a general-audience reference and does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone.
